Sony has reported on its first quarter of the current fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2012. The company as a whole recorded revenue of $19.3 billion, up from $19.1 billion a year ago. Losses increased to $313.9 million, up from $197.8 million a year ago.
Sony’s Game division revenue decreased from $1.8 billion a year ago, to $1.5 billion. The division lost $44.7 million, compared to a profit of $52.3 million a year ago. Sony’s Mobile Products & Communications sector took the biggest hit with losses of $358.6 million. The division profited $20.4 million.
Sony has also revealed the shipment figures of its PlayStation hardware for the quarter. It grouped its two home consoles together and grouped its two handhelds together. The PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 shipped a combined 2.8 million units, down from 3.2 million a year ago. The PlayStation vita and PSP shipped a combined 1.4 million units, down compared to 1.8 million a year ago.
Software sales are also down year on year. 20.1 million PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 games were shipped in the first quarter, down compared to 27.6 million a year ago. 5.8 PlayStation Vita and PSP games were sold, down from 6.6 million a year ago.
